Carnival Cruise-Miami Heat owner Arison among Forbes’ biggest losers
Each year, Forbes Magazine comes out with their list of the richest American’s. What you may not know is that they also see who the biggest ‘losers’ are, from one year to the next.
Carnival Cruise Lines’ Micky Arison lost more than a billion dollars in wealth in 2011. Arison owns the controlling stake of Carnival Corporation, which saw it’s stock plummet 30% over the last year. That loss saw Arison’s worth drop $1.3 billion dollars.
Don’t feel TOO sorry for him though. He’s still worth $4.5 billion dollars and is ranked as the 169th richest person in the world.
Arison, a college drop out, is also the owner of the Miami Heat, and received a lot of publicity in the past year due to his attempts to put together an NBA Champion team consisting of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Cris Bosh. The team lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA finals.
Carnival Cruise Line went into business in 1972 and has grown into the world’s largest cruise company, operating more than 100 vessels using a dozen different brands as diverse as Carnival, Cunard, Holland America and Princess.
Arison was in some elite company on the ‘losers’ list. Fellow members include Warren Buffett (down $3 billion to a net worth of $42 billion); Las Vegas Hotelier Sheldon Adelson (down $2.2 billion to a net worth of $20.5 billion); Ray Dolby, retiring from Dolby Labs (down $2 billion ro a net worth of $2.3 billion) and Larry Ellison of Oracle (down $2 billion to a net worth of $36.6 billion).
