Miami Heat’s Dexter Pittman gets first career start

Heat center Dexter Pittman received the first start of his career on Tuesday after Joel Anthony was scratched from the starting lineup on short notice.

The Heat waited 20 minutes before the game to announce news of Anthony’s sprained ankle. Anthony injured himself against the Magic on Sunday but remained in the game.

Pittman gradually worked himself into the Heat rotation this season, providing bulk against teams with large lineups. He matched up against Marcin Gortat on Tuesday and helped the Heat build a quick 17-8 lead.

Pittman scored his first points as a starter with 5:52 left in the first period with a nifty hook shot. Pittman likes to call it his “go-to move.”

With Anthony’s injury and Pittman’s promotion up the depth chart, Heat reserve center Eddy Curry received first-half minutes against the Suns. Curry, who has been described by the Heat as a long-term project of sorts, hasn’t been able to regularly break into the Heat’s rotation this season despite the team’s lack of size.

Pittman’s addition to the rotation wasn’t the only slight change Heat coach Erik Spoelstra made. James Jones checked into the game in first quarter ahead of Shane Battier on the depth chart.

Pittman’s fouls

After committing four fouls in 6:39 in Saturday’s victory over the Pacers, Heat backup center Dexter Pittman now stands third in the league in fouls per 48 minutes, behind only Houston Rockets rookie Greg Smith and Heat teammate Eddy Curry.

Spoelstra said it is part of Pittman’s second-season orientation.

“The only way to really learn that and get a feel for that is playing time,” Spoelstra said.

“And that’s the Catch-22 for Dexter. His minutes will be spot minutes based on circumstance and the game and the opponent and what we may need. He does give us a positive with his size and his physicality.

“He’s learning the league, learning what he’s allowed to do. He’s a physical player. He works on technique all the time. But the next step for him will be to make adjustments during the game and see how it’s officiated.”

Miami Heat’s Dexter Pittman shapes up, earns time

If you haven’t noticed, Dexter Pittman’s temperament on the court fits into the classic mold of big men who have played for Pat Riley through the years.

He’s tough and not afraid to throw his weight around the paint.

Thanks to hard work off the court, Pittman has had a chance recently to show off his aggressive side during games.

He recorded the first double-figure scoring game of his career Tuesday to go along with a career high in rebounds.

Pittman’s increase in minutes has come after impressing coaches with his dedication to losing weight and getting in shape.

“He’s about where he was when he left last year, which was the best he has been in his life,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

“And so now he’s getting his opportunity on the court. He’s earned this.”

Slowly, Pittman is chiseling out a reputation in the league as a no-nonsense big man. It didn’t take long last season for the Heat to realize how quick Pittman was to lose his temper.

“I can’t tell you how many miniscuffles he and Jamaal Magloire got in last year because he’s a physical player and he’s not afraid of contact by any stretch of the imagination,” Spoelstra said.

“That’s what we like. And now it’s about corralling that and funneling that in the right direction.”

PITTMAN IMPROVING

Dexter Pittman sat out his second game in a row Tuesday with a deep shoulder bruise, but Spoelstra said he’s hopeful the 6-11, 285-pound second-year center could be back soon.

“He’s improving,” Spoelstra said. “Hopefully, in the next couple days he’ll take another step forward.”

Mickell Gladness, signed to a 10-contract on Sunday to fill in for Pittman, had three rebounds and no points in three minutes Monday against the Bucks.

Pittman sidelined

Backup center Dexter Pittman was sidelined Monday, the result of a bruised left shoulder sustained late in Sunday’s victory in Atlanta, when Pittman collided with former Heat teammate Erick Dampier.

“We’ll evaluate him day to day,” Spoelstra said.

Spoelstra also shed light on why Pittman had moved ahead of Eddy Curry in the rotation, citing the time Pittman had in the Heat system last season as a rookie.

“He’s a little bit ahead right now, because he’s had a full summer with us, two training camps,” he said of the 2010 second-round pick out of Texas.

Curry, by contrast, only has been working with the team since December.

“That’s part of it,” Spoelstra said. “I think, again, the whole idea with us with Eddy was thinking big picture, so we’re not in a rush, we’re not in a panic right now. We’re trying to take advantage of every opportunity to develop him and teach him our system and fast track, but you can’t substitute time and practices with it. We’re trying to make the most of it. He needs a little bit more time.”

“This is drastically different than the system he’s used to. And he was out of the league for three years, so he’s made dramatic, dramatic jumps and leaps. We just want to stay patient with him.”

Dexter Pittman making his bid for spot in Miami Heat rotation

Last season Miami Heat center Dexter Pittman spent most of his playing time in the D-League for the Heat’s affiliate, the Sioux Falls Sky Force, so when he found out that he would be on Miami’s roster this season, I’m sure it was a special moment.

However, now we’re a couple months past that time, and I’m sure Pittman has grown anxious to contribute on the court.

Until recently his playing time was sporadic at best, most playing at the end of games in what is known as ‘garbage time’.

In the last two games however, Pittman has seen his role change, and one has to wonder if this is a sign of things to come. He went from playing just 3 minutes in the previous two weeks, to playing 11 minutes in back to back games, and his time on the court was nowhere near ‘garbage time’.

In his last two games he has scored 2 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and turned the ball over just once in each, while racking up a total of 9 personal fouls.

It seems for at least the time being, Pittman is filling the role that the Heat have been grooming Eddy Curry for. Until Curry has reached that point, Pittman will happily join the rotation.

Big Dex is also happy to remind you that since the beginning of training camp, he has dropped 35 pounds. With all the attention paid to Curry’s weight loss, Pittman’s efforts may go by the way side. Curry lost a ton of weight during the offseason, but since the start of camp he has dropped 33 points, two less then Pittman in that same time frame.

Dex has slimmed down to weighing 285 points with a body fax index of 14%. His goal is to get that number down to 11 or 12 percent, and I’m sure his new role in the rotation, if it sticks, will help him reach his goals.

Pittman’s Moment

Category : Dexter Pittman

Chances are, Dexter Pittman will not play for Miami in these finals. He’s only appeared in two games all season and hasn’t been active for any games this series.

But the rookie, a Texas native who played at the University of Texas, has already had a welcome-to-the-finals moment.

Pittman was in the gym at the team’s hotel this week – and Magic Johnson was working out next to him.

On his Twitter feed, Pittman posted, “Man if u told me a year ago ill be doing a bike work out … next to the great Magic johnson ill tell u ur a fool.”

Pittman is one of the Heat’s more prolific tweeters – plus is the team’s youngest player, as evidenced by something he tweeted after the workout, when he announced that he was at a toy store.
