Miami Heat’s Shane Battier tries to shrug off getting burned by Carmelo Anthony in Game 4

MIAMI – Heat forward Shane Battier has been down this road before.

As a member of the Houston Rockets two years ago, Battier spent the better part of a second-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers getting worked by Kobe Bryant.

“I’ll never play anyone as good as Kobe,” Battier said on the eve of Wednesday night’s Game 5 against the New York Knicks, who trail 3-1 in the first-round series.

“He was really in his prime. … He had some big games, but I thought I defended him well.

“What I learned from that was, stay the course. Don’t overreact to certain situations regardless what people think.”

So if you’re wondering whether Battier might be wigging out after getting scorched for many of Carmelo Anthony’s 41 points in the Knicks’ 89-87, Game 4 victory Sunday, don’t sweat it.

Battier, 33, has been around long enough to know that the difference between a hero and a goat isn’t very great.

He acknowledged that he received a game ball Thursday after Miami’s 87-70 Game 3 victory, in which Battier helped limit Anthony to 7-of-23 shooting and 22 points.

But Sunday, Anthony exploded for his 41 points, including 12 of the Knicks’ final 16, and kept the visiting Heat from pulling off a four-game sweep. No team in NBA history has recovered from an 0-3 deficit in a series.

Shane Battier finding his comfort level with Miami Heat

MIAMI – Shane Battier seems like the sort who would easily assimilate.

He’s personable, intelligent, professional and proven. He’s had experience trying to thrive in all sorts of situations, from his youth in Michigan, where his mixed race made it tough to identify with any single peer group, to the Duke campus and finally to NBA cities Memphis and Houston.

Still, the Heat swingman acknowledged that just as it took him some time to find his legs after the lengthy lockout, it has taken some time to find his place in Miami.

It has taken more time and work, for sure, to feel at home here than when he was traded from Houston to Memphis late last season. He began his NBA career in Memphis in 2001 and played five seasons there.

“I had a familiarity level with the organization and the city,” said Battier, 33. “Even though it was new guys, everything else sort of fit, and I was comfortable.”

He’ll see many of those guys Friday night when the Grizzlies visit AmericanAirlines Arena.

They’ll see someone who is starting to feel at ease.

“I feel more comfortable with my teammates,” said Battier, who signed a three-year, $9 million contract in the off-season. “And they know me.”

They know now that he’s a fan of Will Ferrell and Oasis and that, when it comes to NBA strategy, he has an answer for just about everything.

They also know he’s not afraid to embarrass himself, as he did when wearing a double-popped collar in the Heat introductory video, or when he wore a sequined white sport coat while singing Eye of the Tiger as the host of “Battioke.”

Their acceptance?

APPRECIATION FOR BATTIER’S PLAY

APPRECIATION FOR BATTIER’S PLAY

LeBron James wasted little time in thanking Shane Battier for making perhaps the biggest play in Tuesday’s victory against the Sixers.

The Heat led by five late in the fourth quarter when James missed a jumpshot. Instead of Philadelphia gaining possession, Battier dove for a loose ball to grab the rebound. He then passed to Mario Chalmers, who hit James for an alley-oop that put the Heat ahead 92-85 with 1 minute, 27 seconds remaining.

“Right after it happened, I went straight to Shane and told him it was a huge play,” James said. “It was a big play. The dunk, it was the easy part, honestly.”

Battier has been known for plays as such throughout his career. He was surprised at the reaction from teammates after he hit the floor. They thought he was injured.

“Everyone was saying that it looked terrible,” Battier said. “It was like, `Oh my gosh.’ But I’ve fell on the ground so many times during my career. I’m like a stunt man.”

At 33, Battier said he’s calmed his reckless ways on the court to avoid injury.

“I haven’t had stitches in three years,” he said. “I swear I used to get at least 20 stitches a year. No blood, no foul, no harm.”

Expect more Miller, Battier

Forwards Mike Miller and Shane Battier have been in the lineup together recently. Spoelstra said it’s a pairing that could become more common the remainder of the season because of flexibility.

He said it makes opponents have to adjust.

“We envisioned that,” Spoelstra said. “They used to do that when they were in Memphis a while ago.”

Miami Heat’s Shane Battier Beginning To Find Offensive Rhythm

With Shane Battier finding his stroke, the Miami Heat are a nightmare matchup for opposing teams.

When the Miami Heat added Shane Battier this offseason, the old proverb “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer” certainly came to mind. The veteran 6’8″ swingman out of Duke added even more depth to an already impressive collection at wing for the Miami Heat.

A career 38 percent three- point shooter, everyone expected Battier to thrive in the Heat’s system. With the presence of Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh, Battier was sure to receive some of the most open looks from beyond the arc of his career. It seemed like a perfect fit.

Unfortunately for the Heat, Battier got off to one of the worst starts of his career. In almost every basic statistical category (field goal percentage, three-point percentage, free-throw percentage, rebounds, assists, and points) Battier is below his career average. Some of this should come as no surprise.

No matter how talented a player is; playing alongside the Big Three is going to decrease your stat line, especially when it comes to points and rebounds. There’s only so much to go around, especially when Lebron is in the midst of a career year (and maybe one of the greatest regular seasons ever from a pure statistical standpoint).

At the same time, no one could’ve seen the dramatic decrease in his shooting percentage, especially from beyond the three- point line. The media were quick to panic, with some questioning whether Battier had arrived a year too late.

In their defense, Battier was legitimately struggling and over a period of four games- from January 30th to February 5th – Battier attempted 10 three pointers and missed them all.

Heat’s Battier Has Brains, Talent and Heart

No need to use Google when Shane Battier is standing nearby.

If Miami Heat players need a question answered, they turn to Battier, their versatile forward – versatile, that is, with his knowledge.

“He’s probably the No. 1 smartest basketball player and person I’ve been around,” said Heat forward LeBron James. “He knows everything.”

The savvy Battier obviously knows basketball. He can dabble quite well in history, math, finance and religion. After all, Battier was a religion major at Duke.

During a recent practice, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was drilling his players. He asked if anybody knew the width of the court. After seeing some blank stares, Spoelstra turned to Battier.

“He said, ‘I don’t know.’ And he goes, ’50?’ Spoestra said. “And the guys gave him a hard time that even when he doesn’t know the answer he gets it.”

It’s no wonder, then, when the Sporting News in 2010 did a list of the top 20 smartest athletes, Battier ranked No. 7. That was tops among NBA players. No. 1 overall was Oakland A’s pitcher Craig Breslow.

Other NBA players on the list were Phoenix forward Grant Hill at No. 10, Lakers forward Pau Gasol at No. 15 and San Antonio forward Matt Bonner at No. 19.

Hill graduated from Duke in 1994, seven years before Battier.

“It’s a sore subject,” Battier said how Hill feels about being ranked lower.

But does Battier believe he’s the smartest guy in the NBA?

“Intelligence is an esoteric measurement,” he said. “I don’t know. I’m smart, but I don’t know about the smartest.”

Spoelstra meets with stressed Shane Battier

MIAMI – Shane Battier is stressed out. It’s visible in his stats, on his face and in his game.

Battier’s experience since signing with the Heat two months ago – and that carefree day must feel longer ago to him – hasn’t been pleasant.

He is mired in one of the worst shooting slumps of his career while playing a most visible role. Over the last few games, he’s clearly starting to press.

On Monday, after Battier slipped toward rock bottom after a 0-of-4 shooting effort Sunday against the Toronto Raptors, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra met with him.

Even 33-year-old strong-minded veterans need pep talks sometimes. Battier looks and sounds like he certainly did.

“I’m a guy who my entire life going back to eight years old I had a plan,” Battier said.

“I always knew this is the way I am going to do things. For the most part it has worked out that way. So when I have uncertainty, uncertainty does stress me out. That’s what I feel right now.”

Battier is shooting 31 percent from 3-point range and 31 percent on 2-pointers too. This is simply not what anyone expected when he was the Heat’s prime offseason pickup. He’s been solid on defense but his offensive struggles have seen his playing time and aggressiveness erode.

During Sunday’s game, Battier caught a kick out pass from LeBron James during the third quarter in the corner, his favorite spot. He was open. This was the exact reason the Heat signed him, to take this shot. But he didn’t, he passed up the shot and passed the ball.

“Shoot it!” Spoelstra yelled from the bench to Battier as he ran back down the floor.

Miami Heat’s Shane Battier still adjusting to his new team

Miami Heat’s Shane Battier still adjusting to his new team

There was a lot of excitement in South Florida when the Miami Heat signed free-agent Shane Battier, who is known for his strong defense and ability to hit the long-range jumper.

Unfortunately, the offensive game hasn’t quite come around for Battier since joining the Heat. For the first time in his career, he is thinking too much. With teammates like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, it’s hard not to think of deferring to them when the ball is in your hands. Said Battier:

“I’m struggling with the age old question of when to pass and when to shoot. That’s the basic philosophy on offense. The great Hubie Brown said, ‘Know when to pass, know when to shoot,’ and I’m finding a way to mess that up.”

Eventually he is going to have to make the adjustment to stop thinking and get back to where he can rely on his instinct. If not, his cold shooting start to the season could extend through the spring.

As it stands right now, Battier is shooting just 31.3% from the field this season. He hasn’t hit a shot in his last four games, going 0-for-10 from the field and 0-for-6 from downtown.

The 31.3% shooting is a career low for Shane, as are the 23 minutes per game he is averaging. Thankfully, Battier is on a team that doesn’t really have a problem putting points on the board.

Defense is always the focus with the Heat, and that is an area that Battier has been able to contribute on a high level. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was quick to bring that up while defending Battier to the media:

“A lot of this is rhythm and timing and getting used to his minutes. [Battier] is doing a lot of other good things that we notice and that a lot of other people probably don’t notice.”

Battier continues career with talent-rich Heat

Shane Battier is ‘still living the dream.’

It’s hard to believe, but Battier, the Birmingham native and Detroit Country Day graduate, is in his second decade as an NBA professional.

Battier returned to his hometown Wednesday as a member of the Miami Heat. It marked his 11th trip to The Palace of Auburn Hills in his 11th season as an NBA pro.

The 33-year-old standout simply marvels at the elongated career he’s had up to this point.

“It’s gone fast. I’m blessed and I’ve been extremely fortunate,” said Battier with that ever-present smile. “I’ve worked my tail off for the career I’ve carved out. It’s something I’ve dreamt about since I was running around the streets of Birmingham.”

Battier’s trademark since his prep days at Country Day, his college career at Duke and throughout his NBA tenure, is defense. He was named a second-team All-Defensive player twice in his career was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie team in 2002.

“I’ve been healthy and it’s been fun, It’s just been hard work and perseverance that’s allowed me to stick around this long,” said Batter, who also takes a liking to the three-point shot. “Defense and three-point shooting is what’s paid the bills. That’s been a pretty good formula for me.”

Battier’s stops in his previous 10 NBA years were with his original team — the Memphis Grizzlies – and later the Houston Rockets.

This marked his first game in Detroit as a member of the Heat who signed him late last year as a free agent. The 6-foot-8, 225-pound small forward/shooting guard began the season as a top reserve.

Basic Battier

Forward Shane Battier had found himself playing measured minutes, with a single-game high of 24 entering Thursday’s game.

Battier, who started Thursday in place of James, strained a quad early in training camp, the second week of December.

“I’d rather keep him where he is right now,” Spoelstra said of Battier’s minutes before the game, “especially coming off the training-camp injury. The muscle is feeling better right now and we want to keep it that way and make sure we don’t extend it too much where we have a setback.”

It didn’t quite play out that way. Instead, Battier played 49 minutes against the Hawks, with Spoelstra joking in the postgame locker room how he was a horrible manager of minutes.
