Miami Heat’s Udonis Haslem noticeably absent in recent fourth quarters

During key fourth-quarter moments, Udonis Haslem usually is more likely to be on the floor than any Heat player excluding the Big 3.

But Haslem, an asset as a rebounder and defender, has not played at all in each of the past two fourth quarters and has not snapped out of his puzzling seasonlong shooting slump.

Now, with Chris Bosh likely out for a while, there’s an even greater burden on Haslem, who’s averaging 3.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and shooting 31.8 percent (7 for 22) in the playoffs.

He went 0 for 4 from the field, with five rebounds, in 22 minutes in Game 1 against Indiana.

“I can’t judge myself on how I’m playing on offense,” Haslem said.

“The way I look at the game is how I’m doing on the boards and how I do defensively. On the boards, I led us in rebounds per minute last series, and I intend to do the same this series.”

One of the great mysteries of this Heat season has been the decline in Haslem’s shooting percentage to 42.3, well below his 49.4 career average.

Coach Erik Spoelstra said he has no explanation. “All I know is he has [made shots] in big moments,” Spoelstra said.

Haslem said he doesn’t need to score more in Bosh’s absence: “The other guys, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, will pick up the scoring load, so I’ll focus on the energy and rebounding part.”

Asked about not playing in the past two fourth quarters, Haslem said, “I want to be out there, but guys have been getting it done in the fourth quarter.”

Spoelstra said “all options are open” when asked whether he has considered moving Haslem to the bench and starting James at power forward. But James said, “I don’t think I’ll be starting at power forward.”

• The Heat is 4-5 without Bosh this season and 7-7 without him since the Big 3 came together.

Miami Heat’s Udonis Haslem adds new dynamic to heat starting lineup

With the physical Udonis Haslem now in the starting lineup, the Heat seems to have found its best playoff combination.

It had been more than a month since the Heat defeated a playoff-bound team on the road when Heat coach Erik Spoelstra called Udonis Haslem into his office.

In order, the Heat lost away games to Oklahoma City, Indiana, Boston and Chicago over a three-week span before Spoelstra had finally seen enough.

The coach informed Haslem of his decision to elevate him to starter on the eve of Miami’s final meeting of the season with the New York Knicks.

“He said he just wanted energy and effort and just bring what I bring to the table,” Haslem said.

A day later, the Heat finally defeated a playoff-caliber team on the road other than the Philadelphia 76ers for the first time since Feb.?12, as Miami beat New York 93-85.

All it took was making Haslem a regular starter for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

Haslem has started eight games since Spoelstra’s latest lineup change, responding to his new role with high energy and excitement. Haslem averaged 10 rebounds in his final six games of the season.

On Saturday, he will square off against Amar’e Stoudemire in the first game of the Heat’s best-of-7 opening-round playoff series against the Knicks.

The Heat cycled through more than a dozen starting lineups before settling on the one that will walk out on the court at AmericanAirlines Arena against the Knicks.

Joel Anthony started at center alongside Chris Bosh for most of the season. The Heat signed Ronny Turiaf, hoping the free agent could provide instant chemistry.

Virtues of Haslem

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said after Wednesday’s practice that the insertion of Udonis Haslem in the starting lineup has liberated his rotations.

“Putting him in the starting lineup takes care of a lot of other things with the rotation, as well,” he said.

“We think it fits with this starting lineup, but it also puts some other components and people in more comfortable places.”

That seemingly all but confirms a playoff starting lineup of Haslem, Bosh, James, Wade and point guard Mario Chalmers.

“I think we’re all feeling much more comfortable than we did three weeks, a month ago,” Spoelstra said of his new lineup and resulting rotation.

STAYING POWER

Haslem played in his 593rd game with the Heat on Tuesday, tying Alonzo Mourning for second on the Heat’s all-time list.

“It’s huge,” Haslem said.

“Just to think back to when I first came and being undrafted and having to work so hard and the blood, sweat and tears just to be a part of the organization and be a part of the team, and I never would have thought nine years later this is the situation I would be in.”

Haslem trails Wade by three games on the games-played list.

“The thing is, ‘Who’s going to play longer?’ ” Haslem joked. “Now that’s the question. We’ll see. Right now I feel pretty good, and he does also, so we’ll see.”

Haslem, 31, is a year older than Wade. A career reserve, he moved into the Heat’s starting lineup in April and has flourished in his new role. He had 26 rebounds in the Heat’s final two home games of the regular season.

“I’m just going out and playing hard,” Haslem said. “Rebounding is all about rhythm, and I’ve been a real good rhythm of late and, obviously, Chris [Bosh] has been out, so there’s been a couple more available boards.”

Kendrick Perkins Has Technical Against Miami Heat Rescinded: A Fan’s Take

It’s only been a couple of days since Oklahoma City Thunder center Kendrick Perkins was called out by Miami Heat bench player Udonis Haslem for being a dirty player.

Haslem’s complaints came from a hard foul Perkins delivered to Dwayne Wade, which Haslem claimed Perkins would never get away with on the playground. Haslem has always complained about hard fouls, once throwing his mouthpiece at an official for not calling one in the 2006 NBA playoffs.

Haslem might want to throw his mouthpiece again. The NBA just rescinded the technical that Perkins picked up for the foul. This is great news for Perkins because that technical put him one away from a suspension. He is now two away once again.

NBA headquarters study all technical fouls in games, contact the officials with questions and then determine if the technical was warranted. If it was not, they rescind it, meaning that the number a player picks up remains constant.

During a regular season, 16 technicals result in a one-game suspension. During this shortened season, the magic number if 13 and Perkins still has 11 on record.

This is not the same Thunder team that was the choir boys of the NBA two years ago. The Thunder found other teams pushing them around and knew they needed to get tougher if they wanted to take the next step. Oklahoma City signed Perkins and the rest is history.

However, with Perkins comes a lot of physical play and that rubs off onto his teammates. Perkins has the second most technicals of any players in the league, second behind only DeMarcus Cousins.

Add to the fact that Perkins also had five other technical fouls that the NBA has now rescinded and you see how physical his play it.

Miami Heat’s Udonis Haslem says Kendrick Perkins wouldn’t act like such a tough guy on the playground

MIAMI – The Heat’s Udonis Haslem and Oklahoma City’s Kendrick Perkins can’t see each other again this season unless both teams reach the NBA Finals.

Maybe that’s for the best.

After making his displeasure with Perkins known from the bench during Wednesday night’s win against the Thunder, Haslem reiterated it on the radio Thursday. Haslem said Perkins’ foul on Dwyane Wade “got under my skin a little bit.”

“I think anybody can be a tough guy with a thousand people watching on TV, and referees to call fouls, and stop the game,” Haslem told Joe Rose on WQAM-560.

“I definitely think Kendrick Perkins was trying to be a dirty player, and send a message. If we were playing at the park, I don’t think he would be doing all that.

“Where I’m from, all the talking and the playing like that, at some point it comes to a situation where you have to back it up,” said Haslem, who played at Miami High.

“And he’s never had to back it up because, obviously, the referees always step in.”

Haslem did not take issue with Russell Westbrook’s flagrant foul of LeBron James.

“Knowing Russell Westbrook personally, I just don’t think he’s a dirty player,” Haslem said.

“I think he was honestly trying to make a hustle play and take LeBron away from getting a layup.”

Miami Heat’s Haslem misses game for family reasons

TORONTO – Miami forward Udonis Haslem is expected to rejoin the Heat in Boston after missing Friday night’s game in Toronto.

Haslem did not travel with the Heat to Canada because of family reasons, according to the team.

But the Heat’s co-captain could be with the Heat as early as Saturday. The Heat plays the Celtics in Boston on Sunday.

After struggling with his shot during the first half of the season, Haslem has found his form recently.

He scored a season-high 16 points Thursday night against the Mavericks after posting a season high in points (15) against Phoenix on March 20.

Haslem had appeared in every game this season before Friday. Now only rookie Norris Cole has played in every game.

The absence of Haslem allowed for some interesting lineups against the Raptors.

At the end of the first quarter, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra matched LeBron James with reserves Shane Battier, Ronny Turiaf, Terrel Harris and Cole.

In a surprising move, Harris received the bulk of Haslem’s minutes in the first half.

Harris finished with five points in the half, making both of his shots, including a three-pointer.

Harris also picked up three fouls in just eight minutes.

Udonis Haslem confident in the clutch despite struggles

MIAMI – At times this season, Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem has found himself lost on the basketball court.

He rarely knows where he will be positioned or when scoring opportunities will come. It’s part of the adjustment of going from playing in a system he’s known for years to more of a freelance role alongside Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

In time, Haslem will grow more comfortable. Until then, he will continue to endure stretches like the past week.

He went in a span of five days from missing a winning jumpshot against the Utah Jazz to becoming a key, late-game contributor in Wednesday’s victory against the Atlanta Hawks.

“Right now, I’m still trying to figure things out, find things out,” Haslem said. “Every thing is a little different.”

Haslem is shooting 41 percent from the field, the lowest of his career. The season grew worse when he missed a shot at the buzzer that would have beat the Jazz last Friday.

The play was especially damaging because it led to James being criticized for passing to Haslem instead of taking the final shot.

Haslem followed that up by going scoreless the next two games, shooting 0 of 6 from the field. Just as the struggles appeared to mount, he was given chance for redemption against the Hawks.

With the Heat holding an 81-80 lead, Haslem made a play fans at AmericanAirlines Arena have grown accustomed to over the years.

Udonis Haslem’s recent offensive struggles aren’t swaying his confidence

Udonis Haslem’s recent offensive struggles aren’t swaying his confidence

Until recently, Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem hasn’t been much of a source for attention or news. He has been a steady contributor off the Heat bench, never leaving you wanting for rebounds or a few ‘inside the paint’ scores and dunks.

However, thanks to LeBron James being the kind of player that he is, Haslem found the ball in his hands in the final seconds of the Utah game last week, with the Heat down by one and just a couple seconds on the clock.

All Haslem had time to do was put up a wide open 18-20 foot shot that trailed off to the left and barely grazed the side of the rim.

In the past, Udonis has been money from anywhere inside of 20 feet, but perhaps his reserve role needing him primarily to defend and rebound, the outside jumper has gone a bit by the wayside.

That could be due to the new system the Heat has been playing since acquiring LeBron James, Chris Bosh and totally revamping the entire roster, other then U-D and Dwyane Wade.

Now Haslem isn’t as sure of his positioning on offense with so many playmakers and so much freedom allowed to those players to operate.

I have no doubt that Udonis will make the right adjustments and become as stable and consistent as he has always been throughout his career with the Heat.

Few men work as hard, on and off the court, as Haslem, and in time that hard work will show during games.

Other then on offense, Udonis has been playing just as well as Heat fans could’ve hoped. He still plays some amazing defense when called upon, especially against some of the more aggressive big guys he’s asked to guard.

Combine that with grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game while playing in just 25.6 minutes off the bench, and you have to be pretty pleased with those aspects of his game.

Heat’s Udonis Haslem rounding into form

Slowly but surely Miami’s Udonis Haslem’s game is coming around, which is the timetable coach Erik Spoelstra expected after the veteran power forward missed most of last season with a foot injury that required an offseason follow-up procedure.

Lately, in additional to his routine domination on the boards, he has been more reliable with his offense.

“You can’t cheat the game,” said Spoelstra, whose team won 105-90 Tuesday at Indiana and is off until a Friday game in Cleveland that concludes this six-game trip.

“He only played about eight to 10 weeks in the last 12 months, and he was able to do something really unique in the playoffs.

Nobody can miss a regular season and then come into an Eastern Conference finals, the most competitive time of the year, and have an impact, and he did. But that speaks to really his competitive will.

“Then he had surgery the day after the season and was out another couple of months and the lockout, so I think a lot of it was rhythm and he’s been able to get to it.”

To Spoelstra, the slow early go was merely a product of getting past the injury, the lockout and age.

“I said it before – the last lockout, players around 30, it took ‘em about six weeks to get into their normal shape,” Spoelstra said.

“If you’ve been out most of the year, I said probably expect double that. Now with him it won’t take that much more time.”

Haslem said he can feel his game coming around.

“I’ve been getting more and more consecutive minutes at a time, and so I continue to get more and more comfortable,” Haslem said.

Haslem said the only way to improve on the court is to maximize his opportunities on the court.

“There’s been a lack of practice time this season and I didn’t play much last year, so I got to take advantage,” he said. “Those guys had more opportunities to play together than I did last year.”
