Kansas to retire Mario Chalmers’ number
The last All-Star Saturday was eventful for Mario Chalmers, as he competed in the Three Point Shootout.
At the time, the Heat guard expressed a desire to return, but now something even better has come up.
Kansas University announced Thursday that it will retire his No.15 jersey at halftime of the Feb. 16 game against Texas.
“He was as clutch a player as we’ve had here,” Kansas coach Bill Self said in a statement. “He was an assassin on the court.”
That included making the tying 3-pointer in the 2008 championship game against Memphis, a game that the Jayhawks won in overtime.
Chalmers has known for about two weeks that he would be honored, as 27 men and three women have been already.
“I’m excited,” Chalmers said. “For my name to go up there with Wilt Chamberlain and Paul Pierce, Kirk Hinrich and Drew Gooden, it’s a big accomplishment.”
Did Chalmers believe, while playing in Lawrence, that there would someday be a chance of it?
“Um, knowing me, yeah, I thought it would happen,” Chalmers said. “I just didn’t know when.”
