Anthony, Davis join the Linsanity

NEW YORK (AP) – Carmelo Anthony rejoined the Knicks’ starting lineup Monday night and was part of the Linsanity for the first time since it began sweeping New York.

Anthony missed the previous seven games with a groin injury. The All-Star forward was greeted by a huge ovation at Madison Square Garden during introductions for New York’s game against the New Jersey Nets, then scored the Knicks’ second basket.

Baron Davis also made his season and Knicks debut against the Nets, wearing No. 85.

Anthony hadn’t played since Feb. 6, the first game Jeremy Lin became a starter with the Knicks. Anthony played six minutes against Utah, but Lin scored 28 points and the Knicks won their second of what turned out to be seven straight victories.

Anthony came in averaging 22 points per game, but while Knicks fans have been swooning over their new point guard, they also have been fretting about how Anthony and Lin will mix.

“He was pretty good without him so I imagine he’ll be pretty good with him,” D’Antoni said of Anthony before the game. “Everybody will benefit from a good point guard.”

Lin’s emergence as the point guard the Knicks have been searching for has been a boon to the pick-and-roll offense. But that’s not Anthony’s game.

“We’ll run our offense,” D’Antoni said before the game. “Jeremy’s going to run the pick-and-roll. Melo will get the ball and do his thing. We’ll see if it’s balanced. If it’s not we’ll have to balance it and all that.”

D’Antoni figures Anthony and Lin will need some time to figure out what works best for each other.

“Any player wants a point guard that gets him easy shots and Jeremy can do that,” the coach said.

Davis has been recovering from a herniated disk in his back and an infection in his elbow, which delayed his Knicks debut. New York signed him to eventually be its starting point guard, but Lin changed those plans.

The 32-year-old former All-Star will be a much-needed backup to Lin, who has played at least 36 minutes in eight of the nine games in which he has had a major role, topping 40 minutes four times. D’Antoni said Davis also could slide over to shooting guard and play with Lin.

Chris Bosh: ‘I’m Not a Popular Guy, I Guess’

It’s yet to be determined whether or not Chris Bosh will be selected as an All-Star reserve, but after being bypassed as a starter for the East, the Miami Heat forward acknowledged his relatively low popularity amongst NBA fans.

From the Sun-Sentinel:

Bosh said Friday his only surprise during Thursday’s announcement of All-Star starters was that it was Charles Barkley who rushed to his defense, demanding a recount after New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony was voted in as the second East forward alongside the Heat’s LeBron James.

Of course, then there was long-time detractor Shaquille O’Neal. The former center and current TNT studio analyst did not initially have Bosh on his list of East reserves after the starters were announced.

’I never read too much into TV,’ Bosh said. He also never reads too much into NBA popularity contests. ’I’m not a popular guy, I guess,’ he said matter-of-factly of the fan vote for All-Star starters. ‘I don’t think I am. I don’t appeal to the popular crowd.’ Why? ’I don’t know,’ he said. ‘That’s a good question. And you know, it doesn’t really matter to me. I just try to be the best player I can be.’

Dwyane Wade said the popularity will come. ’Chris is just starting to get into the public eye, in a sense, the last year,’ he said.”

Sir Charles offers rare praise of Miami Heat’s Bosh

PHILADELPHIA. Chris Bosh was as shocked as everyone else when Charles Barkley said on TNT that he thought Bosh should be a starter on the Eastern Conference All-Star team instead of Carmelo Anthony.

A running punch line for Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal, Bosh long ago quit watching TNT’s pregame show. He learned about Barkley’s compliment through a friend.

“I thought it was something else,” Bosh said. “It was funny.”

Did Bosh ever imagine a scenario when Barkley would respect his game?

“No,” Bosh said. “To be honest with you, no. But it’s cool. I must be doing … OK.”

Dwyane Wade seemed skeptical of the sincerity of Barkley’s praise for Bosh.

“With Charles, I don’t know what that shows with him,” Wade said.

Despite Barkley’s support, O’Neal kept Bosh off his reserve list. O’Neal has held a grudge against Bosh since his playing days. Still, Bosh was diplomatic about O’Neal’s snub.

“TV, I never read too much into TV,” Bosh said. “You have to keep it interesting and who knows what the people upstairs are saying.”

Bosh is averaging 20.4 points per game this season. His career average is 20.0 points per game. Bosh is shooting 52.1 percent from the field, which is a career high.

More importantly, Bosh helped carry the team to a near-perfect record when Wade was injured.

“It’s been a lot of ups and downs so far this year,” Bosh said.

“I feel that I’m playing the best basketball I’ve played in my career. I’ve learned not to pay too much attention to numbers because they don’t really mean much at the end of the day. It’s about wins and losses.”

Still, he never saw a time when he would be voted as an All-Star Game starter.

“I’m not a popular guy, I guess,” he said. “I don’t appeal to the popular crowd,” Bosh said. “It really doesn’t matter to me. I just try to be the best player I can be.

“I think anyway you can get in is significant, but it’s always a great feeling. It was always a dream of mine as a kid.”

2012 All-Star starters named

Two cities and three franchises accounted for six of the ten players voted starters for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game, announced Thursday.

Dwyane Wade and LeBron James of the Miami Heat were voted Eastern Conference starters for the Feb. 26 game at Amway Center in Orlando.

We Are All Made Of Stars

The fans have voted. Now it’s John Hollinger’s turn to pick the All-Star starters. Track record matters, he writes.

The Lakers’ Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum and the Clippers’ Chris Paul and Blake Griffin were voted starters in the West.

Defending NBA MVP Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls was voted a starting guard along with Wade in the East, with the Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony joining James at forward and Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic at center.

The starters were chosen by fan balloting. Howard was the leading vote-getter with 1.6 million votes.

Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder was the lone West starter from outside the Los Angeles city limits. He’ll start along with Griffin at forward, with Bryant and Paul at guard and Bynum at center.

Griffin and Bynum are first-time starters, while Bryant earned his record-tying 14th consecutive selection.

Bynum grabbed the starting center spot that for years went to Yao Ming, who retired last summer. Griffin was chosen as a reserve forward last year, when he became the first rookie All-Star since Yao in 2003.

Anthony out for Knicks; Wade returns for Heat

MIAMI (AP) – Carmelo Anthony is hurting. Dwyane Wade no longer is.

Anthony sat out the New York Knicks’ game at Miami on Friday night, a contest where Wade made his return to the starting lineup after a six-game absence to recover from a sprained right ankle.

Anthony is dealing with an array of thumb, wrist and ankle problems.

“I’ve just got to be smart,” Anthony said Friday morning.

“I think I was trying to be a superhero and trying to prove to my teammates that I can play hurt, trying to hide it. But at the end of the day me doing that, it wasn’t really doing nothing but hurting the team. … Me being limited out there on the court, it wasn’t doing anything for me, for my psyche, for my body. It was just making it worse.”

In other words, perhaps Anthony is taking his cue from how Wade dealt with his most recent injury.

Wade was injured in Denver two weeks ago and was listed day to day throughout his absence. He returned to on-court conditioning several days ago, went through a hard pregame workout in Detroit on Wednesday night, then did more work in Miami on Thursday and participated in the team’s shootaround practice Friday morning.

“He’s healthy,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Wade. “He’s ready to go. … We were very, very patient with this.”

The Heat are 8-1 without Wade this season. After seeing Wade work Friday morning, Heat teammate LeBron James seemed impressed.

“He looks good,” James said. “He looks like he’s about ready to play.”

Anthony hasn’t looked his best for a while.

Preview: New York (7-11) at Miami (13-5)

The latest injury to Carmelo Anthony is just another concern the New York Knicks must deal with as they try to break out of their current rough stretch.

Facing the Miami Heat likely won’t make things any easier.

The struggling Knicks could have a hard time Friday night trying for a third consecutive victory over a Heat team looking for its third straight win overall.

Losers in seven of its last eight games and still seeking cohesiveness, New York (7-11) could be the NBA’s biggest early disappointment.

“I can’t really put my finger on it right now,” Anthony said. “I can’t figure it out.”

In addition to a sprained wrist and ankle, Anthony also is now dealing with an injured right thumb.

That latest injury plagued Anthony as he went 0 for 7 from the field and finished with one point during a 111-78 rout of Charlotte on Tuesday.

The next night at Cleveland, he scored 15 points while shooting 5 of 14. While his performance was a bit better, the Knicks could not overcome another subpar game from their star and lost 91-81.

“There’s no frustration,” Anthony said of his health. “I’m thinking about my body. There’s a lot going through my mind right now. It’s a tough situation right now due to the circumstances, but I’ll get it figured out. I’ll tell you that.”

Averaging 26.0 points in 15 career games against the Heat, Anthony had 29 and nine rebounds in a 91-86 win at Miami on Feb. 27, less than a week after the Knicks acquired him from Denver.

Why the New York Knicks’ Big Three Can’t Compete with the Miami Heat

Why the New York Knicks’ Big Three Can’t Compete with the Miami Heat

The New York Knicks’ “Big Three” are good, but they’re no Miami Heat.

I must admit Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler are great together, but the New York Knicks’ record doesn’t prove it. The Knicks are just 5-4 this season, while the Miami Heat are 8-2 and look like a team on a mission.

LeBron James is scoring at will, while Dwyane Wade continues to play at a high level and Chris Bosh produces points down low. James leads the league in scoring with 29.7 points per game, and while Anthony is only two spots behind him with 26.6, James’ new post game is frightening for every organization not named the Miami Heat.

It’s no coincidence that the Heat lead the league in points scored per game with 108.1, because they’ve stopped taking shots outside and started driving and playing grown-man basketball. Unlike last season, James and company have stopped settling for outside shots and started using their athleticism to get the ball to the hole.

It’s an athleticism that Anthony, Stoudemire and Chandler can’t match. So far the Knicks’ trio have averaged 19.9 points per game, while the Heat’s big three average 23.5.

Even with the size advantage the Knicks have over the Heat, Miami has better rebounding statistics than New York. The Knicks are 24th in the league with 40.3 rebounds per game, while the Heat are eighth in the league with 43.9.

I know it’s early in the season, but the Heat’s chemistry that they developed last year has paid off this season and the numbers are showing it. A team can’t be first in the league in assists and not have great chemistry.

The Heat are first in the league with 23.7 assists per game, and the Knicks are 22nd in the league with 18.9.

Basically, Stoudemire, Chandler and Anthony will win a lot of basketball games for the Knicks because they’re great players, but don’t expect them to beat the Heat. The Heat have found their identity. That’s going to win them a lot of basketball games and, dare I say, the NBA championship.

They’re using their athleticism to run the floor, James is playing in the post and driving to the hoop, Bosh is scoring the majority of his points down low and Wade is taking care of the late-game heroics.

The 2011-2012 NBA season will be the year “King James” gets his crown, and not even the Knicks’ Big Apples can stop them.

Knicks sign veteran guard Baron Davis

GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP) – Baron Davis’ desire to play in New York outweighed the chance to play with Kobe Bryant or LeBron James.

The veteran point guard signed with the Knicks on Monday, passing up a chance to join stronger teams because he said he always saw himself playing at Madison Square Garden.

“I always kind of rise to the occasion when I’m playing against the Knicks and playing in the Garden,” Davis said at the Knicks’ training facility. “It’s just an unbelievable opportunity and I’m ready to accept the challenge.”

Not yet, however. A herniated disc in his back has sidelined Davis all preseason, an injury he’s heard could keep him out eight to 10 weeks. But Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni hopes it will be much sooner, and the team is willing to wait for the chance to add a veteran to an inexperienced starting backcourt.

“The first order of business is just get him healthy and make sure that when he is able to play, he’s ready to go,” D’Antoni said. “If we get to that point, which hopefully we will, we’ve got one of the better point guards in the league, just adds another weapon to already a pretty good group.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers waived Davis last week and designated him as their amnesty player so the $28 million he was owed over the remaining two years of his contract wouldn’t count against their salary cap figure. No team claimed him, so he was free to sign with anyone.

His hometown Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat both called, and Davis said he even spoke to players on both teams. But he said his mind was already made up that if he got to free agency, he was going to New York – and he even agreed to accept the veteran’s minimum salary, worth about $1.4 million, to do so.

“Those teams did call and I have a great respect for both organizations, but for me it was just the opportunity to play in New York, play in the Garden, play for these fans, and to play on this team,” Davis said.

The Knicks were looking to fortify their backcourt, where they are slated to start youngsters Toney Douglas and Landry Fields, after waiving Chauncey Billups with their amnesty clause so they could afford Tyson Chandler. Though they continue to express confidence in both, both struggled in the Knicks’ victory at New Jersey on Saturday in their exhibition opener, and they decided to take a chance on Davis without even making him pass a physical first.

Davis said he doesn’t care if he supplants one of them or comes off the bench. And though he’s always been more scorer than playmaker from the point, he’s ready for that to change playing with potent scorers Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire.

“A big reason why I came here was because of the front line,” David said. “You just think about two 20-plus scorers on your front line and then a guy like Tyson Chandler, who’s a defensive stopper and a great defensive leader. I think you have the right complements, they all complement each other well and I think that for me it’ll be great to get out on the floor and just play with guys at that talent level.”

Davis played in 58 games last season, averaging 13.1 points and 6.7 assists for the Clippers and Cavaliers. The two-time All-Star has averaged 16.5 points and 7.3 assists since being drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the No. 3 overall pick in the 1999 draft.

The Knicks previously signed another veteran point guard, Mike Bibby, and D’Antoni said they would still like to find another player who can fill in at both forward spots. For now, they believe a healthy Davis, following the big acquisition of Chandler, has them closing the gap on the teams above them.

“We’re getting pretty good,” D’Antoni said. “We can always add somebody, but again it’s a little premature with Baron, we’ll have to wait until he gets well, but we’re pretty good.”

LeBron, other NBA stars cancel game in Akron

The University of Akron says the charity game featuring LeBron James and other NBA stars has been canceled.

A school spokesman said Sunday that the “Homecoming Tour” game with James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony scheduled for Dec. 1 at Rhodes Arena will not take place. He expects the tour sponsor, Google Plus, to send out an official release later.

James’ spokesman did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

With the NBA reaching a tentative labor agreement with players to end the 149-day lockout on Saturday, training camps could open as early as Dec. 9.

James had been set to open the tour in his hometown before going to New Orleans, Chicago and East Rutherford, N.J. Proceeds from the tour were to benefit the four headlining players’ charitable foundations. It is not known if the other games will be held.

Some questions, answers about the NBA labor deal

Some questions, answers about the NBA labor deal

MIAMI (AP) – No, the NBA lockout is not over. Not yet, but soon – once owners and players approve the deal that would have NBA games resume on Christmas Day. Here’s a look at some of the most prevalent questions about the state of things in the league right now.

Q: What happened to get this deal done?

A: As one person involved in the talks told The Associated Press, “sanity prevailed.” Neither side was winning. Owners were losing money. Players were losing money. Fans were getting angry. Because Christmas is traditionally the day when the public really start watching NBA games, there was a late push to try and to salvage the Dec. 25 schedule.

Q: So it’s done?

A: Well, no. There’s still a slew of issues to work through, and then there’s the not-so-small matter of having owners and players actually vote on the deal. Though the deal’s expected to be approved, it won’t be unanimous as there are factions of hard-liners in both camps who will be unhappy with substantive portions of the deal.

Q: How could union chief Billy Hunter and president Derek Fisher “negotiate” with the NBA if the players’ union had been disbanded?

A: When players dissolved the union that meant Hunter and Fisher no longer had the power to negotiate and agree to terms for the players. What could happen and what did happen with the NBA, as it did with the NFL this summer, is that lawyers and representatives for both sides can hold discussions under the guise of antitrust settlement talks. Hunter is an attorney. He knew the rules and the risks. Certainly, this could have blown up for the players and risked their antitrust lawsuit in Minnesota.

Q: What happens to that lawsuit?

A: Barring something crazy, the players will ask that it be dismissed. The league also must dismiss its New York lawsuit about the legality of the lockout.

Q: When will training camp start?

A: Dec. 9. Free agency is expected to begin then, too, meaning some locker rooms may as well start installing revolving doors now.

Q: And the first games?

A: The league wants three games on Christmas Day, and it’s a safe bet the previously scheduled matchups – Boston at New York, Miami at Dallas in a finals rematch, and Chicago at the Los Angeles Lakers – will go on as planned. The Dec. 26 schedule and beyond? Get out your erasers. A lot will be changing.

Q: I don’t understand. If there’s a deal, why is nothing happening for two weeks?

A: Only the framework of a deal is in place. Now the rules, the language, the nuances, they all must be put to paper by the lawyers who will be charged with actually writing the new collective bargaining agreement. Until that’s done, no players can be signed, traded, etc., since there are still no real operating rules by which teams would have to abide.

Q: How will the schedule work?

A: Still unclear. The easiest way to fill a 66-game schedule would be for teams to play four games against each divisional opponent (16 games) and two games against every other team in the league (50 games). It would also ensure that every team makes at least one appearance in every league arena, which is what fans would want anyway. A season without Kobe Bryant going to Madison Square Garden? Not happening.

Q: Will there be preseason games?

A: A person involved with the process tells The AP there will be, but details are still pending. (A good guess: Teams would play two games, probably against a nearby rival.) It’s a strong possibility that those games will have reams of low-priced tickets, a gesture of apologizing to fans for the delay in getting basketball going again.

Q: What about the players who signed overseas? Can they come home?

A: In most cases, yes. New Jersey guard Deron Williams said on Twitter early Saturday that he would soon be leaving his Turkish club, Besiktas. That team will not be thrilled to see him leave – Williams had a 50-point game a few days ago. Some players who signed deals with Chinese clubs may have to work a bit harder (or, well, pay) to escape those contracts.

Q: What happens to these scheduled charity games, like the “Homecoming Tour” featuring LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony, or Mario Chalmers’ game in Alaska on Dec. 1?

A: Organizers were working Saturday to salvage at least some of them. Wade said he wanted to use the planned four-game tour he’s involved with as a way to play competitive basketball before the season, even though he didn’t know at the time when the season would begin. Although most players are in great shape, there’s a big difference between that and “game shape.” A two-week training camp might not be enough time to get them there, either.
